Mallacoota Community Update 28/10/20

This update is over 30 days old.

It is with great sadness that I learned today that unless a buyer is found, the Mallacoota Shell Service Station will cease business on the 20th of November 2020. This is a huge blow to our community. The Shell Servo has been a decades long source of the latest fishing info for locals and tourists alike. John Van Polan was a greatly respected local who ran the servo for years and who’s photos of locally caught fish adorned the servo walls along with some excellent exhibits. Gummy Shark fishing off Secret Beach was an October tradition for many years where locals would meet and head off for a night's fishing. All three of my daughters have great memories of Friday after school, walking down to the Shell and ever so slowly selecting, piece by piece, a dollar's worth of lollies from the huge selection on display. This brought back great memories for me as a child doing exactly the same thing at my local milk bar in the 60’s (except it was 10 cents worth). If any long term locals have memories or a story about the Servo in the early days please include it in the comments. Hopefully a buyer will be found and it will continue to operate. All comments above are my own personal ones.
